Dive Into Your Underwater Backyard
Do you know what lives in your backyard? Here in Edmonds, Washington, our lives intertwine with the ocean. No matter where you live, you are connected to the ocean through the air you breathe. Phytoplankton is responsible for over 50% of the oxygen in the atmosphere, and that is just one of the many reasons we need the ocean to survive.
My Underwater Backyard project, created by Annie Crawley and her Dive Team, teaches our community what lives just below the surface of Main Street in Edmonds Underwater Park. It’s a marine protected area and bird sanctuary serving a very important role in our social and ecological communities.
Every year, thousands of people visit Edmonds Underwater Park at Brackett’s Landing North. Swimmers, dog-walkers, runners, beach combers, scuba divers, bird watchers, and more…we are all drawn to water. There is something for everyone at our beach. Most people do not know what lies below the surface. What do you see when you look out at the ocean? A beautiful view? Sunlight glittering off the water? A group of intrepid scuba diving kids/teens who double as underwater photographers, scientists, and explorers want to share their view.
On this site, Annie Crawley’s Dive Team shares their stories of what exists in our beautiful backyard. Explore our comprehensive list of animals and plants that live in the park and swim through the various ecosystems that make up the 27 acres. Meet our team of photographers, junior scientists, and leaders. Follow along with our blog to read stories from our team about why the park is important to them.
We hope that this website, Edmonds Underwater Park, will serve as a tool to educate and unite our community towards a common goal to protect the life that lives in our backyard and for everyone to speak up for the ocean. Our Dive Team hopes after perusing our site that you will have a deeper understanding of the ocean and be inspired to take action.
We want to hear your Edmonds beach stories and what the park means to you. We need your help to protect our park. Join our team! Reach out to us here.
